By Joseph Sanders

When working with children, play therapy is only one of a number of therapies available. For example, there are a number of therapists working in the area of Applied Behavior Analysis Lake Charles LA whom focus on children. In addition, there are a number of clinics such as Milestones and Sprouts which offer a combination of these therapies to children in the area.

The scientific application of ABA has been used to understand different behavioral issues and patterns for quite some time. For, it is also a therapy used to eliminate or change behavioral problems and emotional issues. In most cases, therapists working in this area use the philosophy that by changing an environment, it is possible to change behavior.

As the recognized science of behavior, ABA has a long history as an accepted and acknowledged practice. The practice actually dates back to the early 20th century. For, the underlying philosophy on which the practice is based comes from an earlier practice known as behaviorism. In behaviorism, people were also taught that by changing the environment, one would be more successful in changing behavioral patterns and overcoming emotional issues.

Past studies have proved over and over again that behavioral problems are a product of circumstance and environment. Whereas, ABA has been using the information provided through the studies to design, develop and treat a number of behavioral issues and problems. As the approach is based on changing behavior, techniques often involve teaching individuals how to better control emotions to eliminate or change negative behavior.

ABA has now been shown to be effective in a number of different areas, including occupational safety intervention, rehabilitation, brain injury, dementia management, substance abuse treatment and parent training. Although, the first ABA treatments involved individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities, thus giving the practice the most recognition and evidence based proof in the field.

The therapy has also been used in teaching children the importance of setting reasonable goals and breaking down large tasks into smaller ones. In doing so, most therapists create environments which reinforce good behavior while changing or eliminating negative behavior and responses. In addition, the application provides children with a sense that learning can be fun rather than frustrating or scary.

In fact, ABA therapies are the only treatment for children displaying signs of autism spectrum disorder backed by over forty years of research with supporting evidence of substantial long-lasting improvement. Most often, treatment plans are designed using research assessments and scientific evidence. After which, the therapist often introduces goals and targets which are then developed and tracked on an ongoing basis.

With all the research that has taken place, ABA has shown to have the best results when treating children with ADHD, ODD and Autism. For, the practice also assist in developing cognitive and social skills. While this is the case, most of these studies are based on children whom received 35 hours or more of intensive counseling and treatment per week over a two year period. As such, parents need to have the ability to commit to this intensive period of treatment in order to see results.
