By Martha Roberts

There is no other known way to involve students in writing, reading and a creative learning process than author lectures. Hiring a credible author who is knowledgeable and has written several reading materials, would be the best way to mentor your students. It is not even the reading materials these authors have written that makes this process meaningful. It is because meeting the experts in person makes this whole writing process, books, and talent, real to students and teachers and easily accessible. This article highlights some benefits of author visits assemblies.

They encourage reading. Most students find reading tiresome and stressful and therefore contributing to their poor class results too. After a mentorship program from an expert, students shed away their old reading habits and becomes serious with eagerness to read more and more materials. They learn that to become a prominent writer, you must develop a reading habit.

They promote creativity. Getting mentorship from various authors with different exposures, helps a student boost his creativity. Various experts use different approaches in writing, and hence every experience with different experts, learners get a chance to learn something new and creative ideas.

These sessions encourage risk-taking. There are many things that our interest leads us to, but most people are always afraid to take the risk or the step of what could be a gateway to their career. Guidance and experiences from these experts motivate one to take the necessary risks to ensure they achieve their goals. Students become risk takers with their teachers, by going beyond their grade targets in assignments and exams.

They ignite ideas in students and teachers. You will find that most of these prominent writers also have a rough background and struggles too. When a writer narrates his path until where he is now, students familiarize with the situation and realize their capabilities regardless of their background. This is when most people find their skills and hidden talents to do something meaningful in life.

They validate teachers. You find that a teacher may teach the same thing over and over, but it does not seem to sink into the mind of the student because of selective listening until he hears it from a writer. Therefore, when these experts visit schools and give the same information their teacher gave, they admire it and understand the context better, validating what their teacher taught.

These sessions help form friendships. Interaction with different experts helps boost friendships among students, teachers, and the scribe. When the students socialize with these experts at a personal level, they build good relationships and continue seeking writing guidance from the expert even after the mentorship session. Teachers also become creative and may coach clients of the professional to enhance their creativity.

They often seek to motivate teachers and students to venture into writing. When teachers and students realize they have what it takes to become writers, they find their voice. By hearing the paths of different writers, from gathering ideas to publishing books, one is inspired to see strategies and fields to write on.
