The Basics Regarding Sci Fi Novels

By Kerri Stout

Science fiction is a style of writing. It includes imaginative stories that are not considered to be real or based on factual events, unlike non-fiction. Usually these are associated with futuristic settings and science, as well as light and time travel, extraterrestrials, technology and space. Sci fi novels may be referred to as literature of ideas because they explore the possibilities of innovations. Writers in this genre may explore themes such as politics, social structure, desire, identity and morality.

There is no singular definition used for science fiction. It is known to include a range of themes and sub-genres. This genre of literature often involves rational writing about possible futures of the worlds.

This is similar to the genre of fantasy, in some ways. However, it is different in that its imaginary components are actually possible based on scientific laws. There are some instances in which the elements of these sci fi books are pure imagination and have no scientific basis.

Usually the time of these novels is set in the future. There might be some placed in historical settings that go against what readers know to be true based on facts and records of history. Most stories are told in settings like subterranean Earth, outside worlds or even outer space. Mutants, humanoid robots, aliens and androids are just some of the characters that might be included in these novels.

These characters may utilize technology that is plausible to the readers, such as computers, teleportation machines and ray guns. Their actions often related to scientific principles that are considered new or even contradict the physical laws we accept to be true, such as wormholes, faster-than-light communication, time travel and more. Different and new forms of social and political systems might also be included in these plot lines.

Characters found in these fictional stories usually have a paranormal ability. They may be involved with mind control, teleportation, telekineses and even telepathy. Typically the settings are in other dimensions or universes. The storyline might even involve traveling between these various dimensions and universes. Many components are linked to sci fi literature, which dates back centuries.

Many categories, related genres and sub-genres exist when discussing the sci fi style. This kind of literature is often classified as soft SF or hard SF. The latter refers to that which pays close attention to getting accurate details associated with the natural science. This might closely describe a world that could be created through advances in technology. In fact, some of the predictions from this genre have come to pass. There is also soft SF that puts more focus on social sciences, such as sociology, economics, anthropology, political science and psychology.

Some of the sub-genres of this include time travel, superhuman, cyberpunk, social science fiction, space opera, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic, military SF, alternative history and more. There are also many genres that are similar to this style of writing, such as: ci-fi, horror fiction, fantasy, supernatural, science fantasy, superhero and mystery. People around the globe are fans of this genre of writing and there are many authors who publish novels in this genre.
