The Works Of Award Winning Authors

By Marcia Marks

Serious readers who enjoy a really good piece of writing should take the time to seek out works by award winning authors. Every category of literature is represented, from journalism to adult fiction and even children's books. Readers can be assured they are in for a real treat as they begin to turn the pages of one of these books.

Buying a book for a child is a wonderful idea. Reading is a skill that should be encouraged from a young age. In fact even a very young child will enjoy having a story read to them. When shopping for good books parents should look out for Caldecott Medal winners. These are stories that have been voted winners by a very experienced committee. No only are they masterfully written but the illustrations are also outstanding. This combination of words and pictures produces an irresistible combination that will have any child enthralled.

Children's literature also awards prestigious awards the main one being the Caldecott Medal. Books that win the medal often become best sellers and can be found on the shelves on many local libraries and schools. One of these is the 1988 winner Owl Moon written by Jane Yolen. This beautifully illustrated book has been loved by many thousands of children and also their parents. Its simple yet charming storyline tells of a parent and child setting out on a cold winter night to listen for owls. Its theme is timeless, and speaks of rites of passage for the youngster and precious memories being made.

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg was the Medal winner in 1986. This beautiful story became an instant holiday classic that has delighted children for well over a decade. It proved so popular that an equally beautiful film version was made recently. This has also added to the appeal of the book and many thousands of children have fond memories of this book as their favorite bedtime story.

The adult authors compete for the Pulitzer prize. The past winners include Dana Priest in 2006 for her work in The Washington Post. She wrote a highly acclaimed report of the governments counter terrorism campaign and exposed many practices that drew criticism from many people. Such ground breaking journalism has helped to put the spot light on many important social and humanitarian issues.

Steinbeck's work helped to emphasize the plight of the lower working class people who had nothing and no one to fall back on. The lack of government support for these people became instrumental in forming social welfare programs throughout the country many of which are still in effect today.

One of America's greatest writers is still Ernest Hemingway. This larger than life character traveled the world and lived the type of life many people can only dream of. His books reflect this and have enthralled readers every since. He managed to incorporate much of the excitement of his own experiences into his characters and settings.

Hemingway is one of a long list of award winning authors who's books are still as valuable today as when they were first written. The messages they convey are those of human struggles and conflict. People today can still relate to those issues.
