The name for the cage in which fighters match is the Octagon because of its eight sides.

Fighters must wear no shoes and shorts while fighting. They are not permitted to wear long pants or shirts. If open-finger gloves are used, they have to be cleared in advance. Those who wear gloves do so to protect the hands from injury while punching. Jockstraps and mouth guards are required and must be approved beforehand.

There are multiple ways in which fights of this kind can end, for instance: no contest, TKO or technical knockout, submission, forfeit, judges decision, disqualification. A 10-point judging system is used for fights. There are three judges present to score the players have each round. The round winner is given 10 points and the loser will receive 9 or less. There are more than 30 fouls that may be called during fights and sometimes points are deducted by offenders.

The fighting championship has become extremely popular in recent times, particularly following the expansion in television coverage of fights. Fans usually follow UFC blogs and mainstream coverage as a way to stay up on everything that is going on in the industry.
