Summarize your idea into a single sentence. This sentence should not exceed fifteen words yet must capture your intentions. Leave out the names of characters or scenes from the sentence. Look for major book reviews and craft a sentence similar to what they give.

Expand the sentence into a paragraph that captures the main occurrences in your plot. Describe the setup of the story, the major disaster and triumph as well as the ending. Take the Three-Acts structure where Act One captures the introductory disaster, Act Two offers the second disaster midway while Act Three is the ending of your story. Five sentences are enough to summarize the book.

Your novel will be anchored on characters. Since you have an idea of your story line, it is time to develop your characters. Give them names beginning with the main characters. The minor ones will be developed during actual writing. The story of each character should be summarized into a single sentence. Give each of them a goal, motivation, conflict and epiphany.

Your summary paragraph and sentence are not cast on stone. The process of developing the plot and the characters will teach you something new. Be ready to make the changes since this is an indication that scenes and characters are revealing something new. The development of the plot reveals new things that will energize your story.

Now when one has already finished this, then he may move on to create the flow of his story by making use of an outline that will help him have proper coherence. Now the traditional flow of events would actually be of course the intro of the main characters, then the build up of this story, then the big climax wherein a twist would usually happen which would be followed by the conclusion. With this model, one can make an outline first and just fill up the details after.

So first off would be the introduction which usually can be found in the first chapter. Now in the first chapter, the author will be introducing the protagonist and will be talking about the setting. Now once the introduction stage has already been finished, then of course the next stage is the building up of this story which is where the antagonist or the villain would be introduced. Now along with the villain, there is a conflict of interest that would be introduced as well. It would be the job of this hero to try to resolve that conflict by fighting the villain.

Now when the story would start to pick up the pace, then it is heading for the climax part wherein the main battle of the hero would begin. Readers would all agree that the climax is the most blood pumping part as this is where the resolution would come in. It is the part that leads directly to the resolution.

Now in this stage, there would usually be a twist. For those who do not know what the twist is, the twist is an unexpected turn of events that happened to the hero. There are times that the twist would come before the climax but traditionally, it would come after.

Last would be the resolution wherein the hero has already resolved the conflict. Now the author can choose to create either a happy ending or a bad ending here. It does not really matter as long as the hero has already resolved the conflict that he was battling during the earlier parts of the story.
